Founder of The Learning Nest
Welcome to The Learning Nest! I’m thrilled to introduce you to a place where every student’s unique learning needs are embraced and celebrated. With over 25 years of experience in public education and a deep passion for supporting students with diverse needs, I am dedicated to creating an environment where every learner can thrive.
My journey in education began as a special education teacher, where I developed a profound understanding of the challenges faced by students who struggle in traditional classroom settings. My work as a dyslexia specialist, complemented by extensive training and certifications in various literacy programs, has equipped me with the tools to effectively support learners with reading difficulties.
As a mother of four and a foster parent for the past 10 years, I bring a personal and compassionate perspective to my work. My experiences have given me valuable insights into the effects of trauma on learning and the importance of creating a nurturing environment that fosters both emotional and academic growth.
My passion extends beyond traditional teaching methods. I have specialized training in trauma-informed care and the neuroscience of learning and behavior, which allows me to incorporate sensory experiences, movement, and connection into the learning process. This holistic approach is designed to create felt safety for students, helping them overcome barriers and engage more fully in their education.
Imagine a school that is a home-away-from-home, where you and your children feel safe, loved, and supported.
Children will have access to a wide variety of foods, including snacks, fruit, and other options (crunchy, chewy, soft, hot or cold) to help them regulate and feel their best. Food will never be used as a reward or withheld, but rather as a tool to support their bodies and nervous systems.
Water is available throughout the day without the need to ask for permission.
Bathroom access is always open and does not require permission.
We are also creating small "snugs" for children to have quiet or alone time when needed. This space will never be used as a punishment or reward, but as a supportive environment as students are working, resting, or resetting their nervous system.
Calming and sensory strategies will be incorporated into each day, ensuring that your child's well-being comes first. Our motto is "Regulation before Education" for a reason.
